Almost every matrimony website in India advertises free registration, and almost none of them are free to use. The business model is consistent: make the profile free so you invest hours of effort into it, then charge at the exact moment that effort would pay off. By the time you hit the wall you have already uploaded photographs, entered your horoscope and shortlisted people — so paying feels like the only sensible option.

The way to avoid this is to check for the paywall before you invest the effort, not after. There are seven places it normally sits.

The seven paywalls to check for

• Messaging. The most common one. You can send an interest free, but the chat opens only on a paid plan. Check whether messaging an accepted match costs anything.
• Contact details. Phone number and email are blurred and revealed by subscription. On a genuinely free site, contact visibility is a privacy setting the member controls, not a product you buy.
• Profile view limits. Some sites cap how many profiles you may view per day, or how many search results you can page through, unless you upgrade.
• Search filters. The basic filters are free, but the ones that actually narrow a Tamil search — sub-caste, rasi, natchathiram — are marked premium.
